Friendship, Family & Fineness: Creed III

03/07/2023 by Sherring D.

I was pleasantly surprised and pleased with the storyline, a friends-to-adversaries trope. By no means is it threadbare as I had feared. I admit I rewatched Creed and Creed II over the weekend in anticipation of watching Creed III to continue blessing my eyeballs with beautifully melanated pectorals, tight sweaty abs, and strong jawlines resting in handsome faces. I didn’t expect much of a plot and had made peace with that, but I was wrong.

End of an Era

03/04/2023 by Sherring D.

Before it clicked to designate a specific notebook for the Gotham workshops, I grabbed random notebooks or journals I had lying around my apartment to bring to the afterwork workshop. Years of writing are spread throughout various notebooks. Not to mention, I have a stack of unused journals deemed too pretty to use, or I’m waiting for That Special Project to pull them from the shelves. Dozens of unused notebooks and journals, yet I still begin drafts or jot notes on the backs of envelopes received in the mail. After buying a 2-pack of thin journals at Marshalls, I decided the black and gold one with “WRITE IT” across the front would be dedicated to Gotham.

Sherring’s Goodreads: Tanqueray

03/03/2023 by Sherring D.

If you’re familiar with or follow Humans of New York (@humansofny) on Instagram run by photographer Brandon Stanton, then you may be already familiar with Stephanie Johnson, better known as Tanqueray. If you’re not familiar or don’t follow, then let the story of a spunky elderly lady in her 70s, born and raised in Upstate New York who ran away to the city for a more glamorous life, be your sign to do so.

Sherring’s Goodreads: The Mermaid of Black Conch

02/24/2023 by Sherring D.

Never in a million years would I think that adult me would love a book centered around a mermaid. Just like when I watched Disney’s The Little Mermaid and await the live action version starring Halle Bailey, I had zero problems suspending disbelief to get into the story. The descriptions and narrations are beautiful. I feel empathy for Aycayia and loathe the fishermen and the people who try to capture her.

Sherring’s Goodreads: Love Radio

02/16/2023 by Sherring D.

I’m a reformed book snob, who used to believe adults shouldn’t read YA (young adult). Then I delved into the world of authors Tiffany D. Jackson, Elizabeth Acevedo, Ben Philippe, Dhonielle Clayton, to name a few. These young adult characters experience stress and drama on a level that keeps this grown adult invested in the storylines.

Love Radio is Ebony LaDelle’s debut novel. Not only is it YA, but it’s a love story about teenagers Prince Jones and Danielle (Dani) Ford. I started following LaDelle on Instagram after seeing her speak on a YA panel at the 2019 Well-Read Black Girl festival, which also featured some of the aforementioned writers. Her credentials include book marketing and co-hosting a book club called Why Not YA?

Don’t Call It a Bucket List

01/24/2023 by Sherring D.

Despite hardships, I have to admit I’ve had a decent life, at least I’ve carved and continue to carve one for myself. I’m grateful I’ve done an accomplished some amazing things, had great experiences. There’s plenty of wiggle room for people, places, things and experiences that I’d like to have and thought I’d have by now. “Au contraire,” said Life. “You’re gonna take X, Y, and Z, and roll with it.” And that I have. It hasn’t always been easy, but I make it work, usually after some tear-shed.

Sherring’s Goodreads: There’s No Crying at Christmas

01/13/2023 by Sherring D.

Allie’s childhood bully and adult nemesis Cole is also her brother Adam’s best friend and radio co-host. The two are always instantly at each others’ throats hurling insults on sight. It’s hard for Allie to avoid seeing Cole after traveling home to Tennessee from NYC for the first time in 4 years. She’s there not only to celebrate Christmas, but to lick her wounds from a recent break-up. Fun fact: we first met Allie in Gleason’s Falling.

Sherring’s Goodreads: Falling

01/13/2023 by Sherring D.

Falling by G.G. Gleason is a cute, yet spicy friends-to-lovers read. I loved the sexual tension and comfort level between Connie and Josh. The whole time I was reading it, I kept wondering: why couldn’t I have a lifelong best friend to fall in love with? Life would’ve been much easier. It would’ve saved me from the agony and defeat of hopping on and off these damn dating apps.
